Initially announced by DARPA in 2017, the Ocean of Things project is deploying small, low-cost drifters in the Southern California Bight and Gulf of Mexico to collect data on the environment and human impact. This includes sea surface temperature, sea state, surface activities, and even information on marine life moving through the area.

“Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface, but we know very little about them,” said Ersin Uzun, vice president and general manager of the Internet of Things team at Xerox. “The drifters gather data that we could never track before, enabling persistent maritime situational awareness.”

Each solar-powered drifter has approximately 20 onboard sensors, including a camera, GPS, microphone, hydrophone, and accelerometer. The different sensors can provide data for a broad array of areas including ocean pollution, aquafarming and transportation routes.

PARC leveraged its more than fifty years of experience developing industry-leading technologies to design a drifter that best fit the DARPA requirements for the program. Among other things, the float needed to be made of environmentally safe materials, be able to survive in harsh maritime conditions for a year or more before safely sinking itself, and use advanced analytic techniques to process and share the data gathered.

PARC built 1,500 drifters for the first phase of the project and will deliver up to 10,000 that are more compact and cost-effective for the next phase. Data gained in this round will help further optimize the final design, at which point DARPA expects to deploy large volumes of these drifters to provide continuous information and a better understanding of oceans that is missing today.

We think so. You may not, and that’s fine.

Looking ahead to 2020, Xerox today announced its inaugural Color of the Year: Clear.

While acknowledging debates as to whether the absence of all colors is itself a color (it is), Xerox stands by its choice of clear, the same color (or non-color) as fishbowls, windows and cellophane.

Just as these transparent surfaces give us a view into what lies behind them, Xerox’s Color of the Year showcases the importance of creating a fresh look into an unobstructed future, in hopeful yet clear-eyed anticipation of what lies ahead.

“It can enhance a color, it can brighten a color, it can sometimes add saturation to a color,” said Beatriz Custode, Color Customization & Engineering Services at Xerox.

For centuries, artists from Leonardo Da Vinci to Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun have used layers of clear, called glaze, in their masterpieces – to add depth and texture or make them sparkle in the light. Even for those who aren’t fine artists, clear changes how we see the world. For example, house paints are typically available in different levels of gloss or semi-gloss allowing for a similarly shiny, reflective effect, and high-gloss paint washes easier than a Rembrandt.

In printing, Xerox technology such as the iGen® 5 Press, Iridesse® Production Press, and new PrimeLink® C9065/C9070 lets creatives use clear ink in their projects as readily as other colors, including metallics and fluorescents.

In the coming days, we will celebrate the art and science of clear and welcome a debate about whether clear is a color. We believe it is, and after you see our mini-documentary so will you. #Clear2020

Operators can either run several scanners at the same time, or scan on one while setting up another – multiplying the number of pages scanned per hour.

The DocuMate 6710 is designed for industries where large quantities of paper are still a reality – like discovery documents in the legal world, incoming medical records in healthcare, or testing and student records in education. The DocuMate 6710’s speed and paper capacity allows operators to easily and quickly scan batches, which is especially important in a situation where a customer must wait for the operator to complete the scan.

Under a trademark licensing agreement with Xerox Corporation, the DocuMate 6710 will be manufactured and marketed by Visioneer pursuant to Xerox’s quality control standards.

Scan Speeds as Advertised
True production speed is a combination of scanner speed, onboard image processing, the connected PC and the software delivering the scan to its destination. The Xerox DocuMate 6710’s 100 pages per minute speed is supported by:

Visioneer’s On-Board Acuity technology, which incorporates 15 image enhancement algorithms in the scanner. The processor-intensive work is done before the data even hits a PC.

A true native USB 3.0 connection to speed the communication between the scanner and the PC.

Visioneer Acuity, which detects and leverages available memory and processing power of the connected PC to ensure the PC itself is not a bottleneck.

A 35,000 page per day daily duty cycle and 300-sheet automatic document feeder.

“The DocuMate 6710 is a smart long-term investment, especially when you consider that parallel scanning allows you to double or triple your capacity at an affordable price,” said Walt Thinfen, president and CEO at Visioneer. “Parallel scanning allows for continuous performance, and when combined with the DocuMate’s 6710 true production speed, operations managers will see significant daily productivity improvements.”

True workflow and integration
The DocuMate 6710 includes Visioneer’s OneTouch® with Acuity, which allows operators to define the steps the scan goes through from scanning to integration with the destination. Users can define up to 90 different jobs and start them directly from the scanner’s control panel, and different jobs can run concurrently on one PC with parallel scanning. Once a scan reaches its destination, Visioneer TWAIN DriverPLUS with Acuity provides precise integration with the final destination or IT application.

Pricing and Availability
The Xerox DocuMate 6710 has a suggested retail price of $6,500.00 and is immediately available for purchase online at www.xeroxscanners.com/DM6710 and from authorized resellers in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

DARPA, whose mission is to identify and pursue high-risk, high-payoff research initiatives for national security across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines, announced the first programs under its new Disruptioneering effort in August 2017. The new program pushes for faster identification and exploration of bold and risky ideas with the goal of accelerating scientific discovery.

Existing conceptual design tools are informal, do not map to topology, and cannot search design space systematically. This project aims to change that, and begins by answering questions like, for example, “what do new designs for an aircraft that combines design elements of a helicopter and a plane look (and fly) like?” As this smart system designs a complicated mechanical system, the software will also model how well each design will fly in the real world, understanding components, safety, functionality, and other important aspects of the aircraft.

To advance the goal of the program, PARC and UW-Madison will develop Design by Function-sharing thrOugh Compositional qUalitative Synthesis (D-FOCUS), an entirely new mathematical framework for systematic conceptual design of complex mechanical assemblies such as vehicles and aircraft. This advancement in science will enable the systematic search for a topological layout (i.e., structure or form) that fulfills functional requirements that can be instantiated into models to generate preliminary, detailed, and optimal designs. By automating significant portions of the design process, the human designer can explore a substantially broader design space with a deeper understanding about the advantages and limitations of design choices they make.

Johan de Kleer, lead on this project and AI expert in Qualitative Reasoning, Model-Based Diagnosis and Design, said, “Integrating functional, behavioral, topological and geometric reasoning in one framework will revolutionize future design tools.”

PARC’s System Sciences Laboratory leads research and development in AI, machine learning, control, planning, optimization, security and high-performance analytics for a variety of cyber-physical system applications serving Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), CAD/CAM, Transportation, IoT, Additive Manufacturing, Energy, and Defense sectors. This lab also houses PARC’s renowned social sciences group and innovation service offerings such as rapid prototyping, user needs research and innovation management consultancy.
Last year Xerox unveiled its Direct to Object Inkjet Printer, which prints directly on 3D objects in minutes. The personalized images are produced through Xerox’s own XMPie® software.

Xerox will be displaying these tech demos in booth 2254 at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas, from Sept. 25-27. Along with the printing demonstrations, Xerox will showcase folding carton printing, and printing on plastics, napkins and other samples from the Direct to Object Inkjet Printer.

Based in Seongnam, South Korea, NAVER is Korea’s leading Internet company, operating the nation’s top search portal “NAVER,” and other innovative services in the global market such as the mobile messenger LINE, video messenger SNOW and community app BAND.

Founded in 1993, the Xerox Research Centre Europe is located just outside Grenoble, often dubbed the Silicon Valley of Europe. The centre has focused its research in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and ethnography.

“The research expertise at the European centre is perfectly aligned with NAVER’s. We expect immediate, powerful synergies,” said Chang-hyeon Song, CTO of NAVER, and CEO of NAVER Labs. “XRCE's world class R&D achievements in AI technology, including computer vision and machine learning, will significantly strengthen NAVER Labs’ research in ‘ambient intelligence’ including autonomous vehicles, AI/deep learning, intelligent 3D mapping, robotics and natural language processing.”

With such a strong foothold in Europe, NAVER expects to considerably accelerate its development of ambient intelligence technologies around the globe and in particular in AI.

“Xerox is a company built on innovating the way the world works and we maintain a commitment to innovation in a wide variety of technical areas including both the future of print and the future of work,” says Steve Hoover, Xerox’s Chief Technology Officer. “The majority of research taking place at XRCE was supporting Xerox’s business process outsourcing unit, now an independent company and no longer aligns with Xerox strategy. This transaction will allow us to better optimize our R&D investment, focusing in areas more aligned to our business.”

“Research and innovation remain a critical element of Xerox’s strategy and research in such areas as artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, ethnography, inkjet and digital printing and digital manufacturing, will continue at our famed Silicon Valley based Palo Alto Research Center (PARC, A Xerox Company) and at the Xerox Research Center of Canada, as well as engineering for product development in locations throughout the globe,” added Hoover.

Once the sale becomes final, all 80 plus researchers and administrative staff are expected to become part of NAVER. Xerox will maintain ownership of intellectual property and arrange licensing agreements with NAVER.

Engineers at Xerox (NYSE: XRX) looked at those productivity barriers and designed ways individuals can use multifunction printers (MFPs) and apps to automate personal work processes.

Take a daily office chore such as scanning a document to your email, saving the file, and then uploading it to a cloud storage service such as Dropbox. That takes time. But, what if a personal work app streamlined the process by handling these tasks for you in fewer steps, enabling your MFP to serve as a smart, connected workplace assistant?

“We’ve created a series of capabilities – you could call it a toolkit – to enable users to customize printers and MFPs in a way that’s similar to how individuals use smart mobile devices to meet their personal needs,” said Keith Watson, part of Xerox’s Experience Design Group. “We’ve put the familiar interface of iOS or Android devices onto our ConnectKey®-enabled devices. But it’s more than embedding a tablet into our products, our innovations aim to address the specific needs of our customers.”

With a familiar tap or swipe, for example, users can translate a document, scan directly to a client folder in the cloud or complete a loan application – whatever their work requires. Enhancements to the ConnectKey interface are included in the 29 printers and MFPs Xerox launched on March 29.

“This launch marks a significant change in how work is accomplished,” said Steve Hoover, Xerox chief technology officer. “As the Internet of Things expands, the physical and digital worlds move closer together. Xerox innovations help office workers navigate by integrating their devices with the app world, creating an ‘open app ecosystem’ that makes it easier for workers to design how to best get their work done.”

In addition to focus groups and user experience testing, Xerox turned to its expertise in ethnography to enhance the ConnectKey platform. Ethnography is an in-depth approach to study human behavior. The ethnographic methodology, first applied to industry by Xerox social scientists in the 1980s, is a proven, systematic approach for capturing qualitative data about how people act in the workplace – what they do, what tools they use, how they interact with others and how they think in the real-life, natural settings where these behaviors occur.

“Every day we control our smartphones or tablets through a user interface that’s become so familiar it’s taken for granted. But behind the interface is complex software that helps us with tasks in daily life – getting directions in an unfamiliar city or checking airline fares, for example,” said Michael Kirby, manager of the AltaLink controller development group. “ConnectKey is the result of Xerox essentially re-imagining the user interface for an office portfolio.”

The ConnectKey portfolio now includes the Xerox VersaLink® and AltaLink® series both introduced on March 29. The VersaLink devices – 19 printers and MFPs – are tailored to small workgroups and teams that work across different offices. The AltaLink series includes 10 MFPs designed for larger workgroups. All 29 products share a similar user interface, which provides consistency to the workplace.

“Distributed sensing enables richer knowledge of any environment, detecting air quality, temperature, humidity, occupancy, and more,” said David Schwartz, project lead and Manager of Energy Devices and Systems at PARC. “Sensors need to be low-cost, easily deployed, require little or no maintenance, and be able to store enough energy to do their job. PARC’s flexible, printed and hybrid electronics enable the unique peel-and-stick form factor, provide affordable, plug-and-play installation, and allow for remote radio frequency power delivery.”

PARC has a long history in developing hybrid electronics with varying functionality and flexible form factors. One of the challenges in distributed sensing is power. PARC’s low-cost sensors are powered by RF energy instead of batteries, which have limited life, or light, which can be ineffective inside of buildings. The innovative peel-and-stick deployment provides simple and affordable installation advantages. Sensors can be applied throughout the facility and easily replaced or moved when necessary, allowing for a deeper and more accurate understanding of building environment than what is currently available. The sensors are also auto-locating, facilitating commissioning, and enabling additional capabilities, such as automatic wall mapping.

The IoT requires a myriad of solutions to help us sense and interpret the world. Printing is a promising approach to mass-produce and customize sensor systems to support the fast growing IoT. The low cost, flexible form factor, and simple installation are ideal for a variety of applications including building efficiency, air quality, smart cities, industrial and residential safety, and wearables. In addition to the cost of fabrication and materials, commissioning is a major barrier to economical implementation. Automatic localization, simplified calibration, and redundancy can help reduce the commissioning effort required. The key to the success of any widespread IoT deployment is the ability to utilize configurable, on-demand, low cost, sensor systems, and to design the technology to best fit the application.

“Business Insider Intelligence predicts the IoT market to become a $6 trillion market by 2021. “Distributed, networked sensing and data collection is the basis of the IoT. PARC is poised to provide a variety of the IoT sensors given our deep and rich history in printed electronics,” said Schwartz.

The DOE Buildings Energy Efficiency Frontiers and Innovation Technologies (BENEFIT) solicitation this past year is funding a total of 18 projects, encompassing sensors and controls, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and related technologies, windows, building envelopes (the physical elements, such as doors and walls, separating a building's interior from its exterior) and energy modeling. The RFID projects fall within the sensors and controls category.

Last year, PARC announced its methane detection sensors, based on printed sensor arrays fabricated on polymer substrates. PARC is developing very low cost printed sensor arrays to quantify and locate methane leaks, using a variety of modified carbon nanotube (CNT) materials. The combined response of the sensors provides "fingerprints" for methane and other gases. This approach offers a solution to identify, quantify and locate natural gas leaks at a cost point compatible with widespread deployment. Methane, a major component of natural gas, is a significant greenhouse gas, with many times the heat-trapping effect of carbon dioxide. For more information on this or other PFE innovations, please visit PARC’s website.

About PARC
PARC, A Xerox Company, is in the Business of Breakthroughs®.
The nozzles are contained in print heads – about the size of a deck of cards - that accurately spray ink on objects as small as bottle caps and as large as football helmets. The printer can print on plastic, metals, ceramics and glass, eliminating the need for costly labels.

“This innovation opens up a path for creating customized products instantly at a time when the consumer’s appetite is all about personalization,” said Brendan Casey, vice president of Xerox Engineering Services. “Imagine a sports fan coming home from a game with a helmet or ball that was personalized right at the stadium, or a retailer offering on-demand personalization on hundreds of different store items.”

Xerox uses enhanced image-quality algorithms to direct the microscopic nozzles half the width of a human hair. By accurately spraying ink at distances of one-quarter inch, the printer is able to print on smooth, rough, slightly curved or stepped surfaces at print resolutions ranging from 300 to 1,200 dpi. The printer can handle up to 30 objects per hour, with the ability to scale for production.

“The real innovation here is that we can now print on items, such as steel water bottles with multiple curves, without the setup time and costs that analog printing such as flexography or screen printing require,” said Wayne Buchar, chief engineer, Xerox Engineering Services. Other innovative features include:

The ink jets are compatible with virtually any type of ink chemistry including solvent, aqueous and UV inks and can be operated at temperatures as high as 140°C, enabling jetting of specialized inks that meet demanding requirements.

The innovative architecture features a flexible design for holders so that objects can be changed out easily.

Xerox software ensures precise head-to-head registration and best in class color calibration.

The new printer promises to create new revenue opportunities for a number of industries:

NextFlex is a public-private consortium of companies, academic institutions, nonprofits and governments with a mission to advance US manufacturing of flexible hybrid electronics. NextFlex encourages investment in the manufacturing ecosystem for this exciting technology, in return for receiving intellectual property, new product ideas and partnering opportunities.

PARC has been developing innovative technologies in the area of printed electronics for 15 years, and is working with a variety of commercial partners and government agencies to bring these technologies to market. This portfolio of work comprises material science, novel 2D and 3D printing, and process-driven design that will deliver entire libraries of smart components and systems. The "inks" are nanomaterials, molecular semiconductors, inorganic composites, and even tiny silicon chiplets that form circuits, sensors, light emitters, batteries, and more, integrated directly into products of all shapes, sizes and textures.

Flexible hybrid electronics brings together the industries of microelectronics, electronics assembly and printing. It will enable on-demand fabrication of custom electronics for smart wearable devices in conformal shapes, intelligent packaging, as well as sensors incorporated in the fabric of buildings, cities, cars, airplanes and even robots. Literally, we will have the capability to embed intelligence into all products and objects surrounding us, paving the way to the “Internet of Everything.”

PARC is working with a variety of materials and printing companies to enable a vast number of applications and services for a wide range of industries, from packaging to wearables to payment systems. Karl Dueland, Vice President, General Manager of Digital Manufacturing at Xerox commented, “We’re very excited about these PARC technologies and the commercial opportunities they represent for Xerox and the value they can bring to the market.”

PARC’s work in the field of printed, flexible electronics includes a variety of projects:

FLEXIBLE X-RAY DETECTORS: PARC has successfully manufactured a flexible X-ray detector prototypes using advanced thin-film transistors (TFTs). Measuring 10 diagonal inches, the device has been jointly developed at the Flexible Electronics and Display Center (FEDC) and PARC in conjunction with the Army Research Lab (ARL) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The devices will be used to advance the development of flexible X-ray detectors for use in thin, lightweight, and highly rugged devices. The technology will also enable other bendable, conformal, optical and acoustic imaging solutions for medical and security applications.

HYBRID PRINTED STRAIN SENSORS: PARC developed flexible strain sensors that transmit wirelessly the degree of bending of a foil substrate in two dimensions. The sensors are printed on a transparent substrate and comprise a printed energy harvesting antenna and an integrated microchip. This platform enables applications such as structural monitoring on the surface of aircraft wings or buildings. The project was funded by the FlexTech Alliance.

HYBRID ELECTRONICS FOR WEARABLES: PARC, in collaboration with University of California, San Diego (UCSD) developed printed hybrid biosensors that monitor glucose and lactate in saliva. The hybrid fabrication techniques used in this development make it possible to integrate the sensor in a mouthguard. The project was funded by the Nano Bio Manufacturing Consortium (NBMC).

PRINTED METHANE SENSORS: Under the ARPA-E Methane Observation Networks with Innovative Technology to Obtain Reductions (MONITOR) program, PARC will deliver low-cost printed sensor arrays to quantify and locate methane leaks, using a variety of modified carbon nanotube sensors. The combined response of the sensors will provide information on location and leak rates for methane and other gases. PARC has also developed other printed sensors to monitor electro-chemical, temperature, strain, light, and other gases.

PRINTED CHIPLETS: PARC has taken its understanding of printing and created a way to print smart materials with the throughput and cost of laser printers, but with the precision and functionality of nanotechnology. The typical printing process places colored toner particles on digitally designated locations to form patterns at high speed, handling >100 million particles per second for only pennies per a page. PARC realized that this same process could be used to handle microscopic chips, instead of toner, to form complex electronic circuits on demand, making electronics fabrication as simple as printing a document.

VANISHING ELECTRONICS: PARC’s Disintegration Upon Stress-Release Trigger (DUST) technology under DARPA’s Vanishing Programmable Resources (VAPR) program is an innovative technology based on stress-engineered glass that allows electronic devices -- chips, sensors and other electronics -- to be rapidly and remotely disintegrated on command, leaving small, dispersed particles, unseen to the human eye.

PEEL-AND-STICK SENSORS FOR BUILDINGS: The Energy Department recently announced its investment of $19 million to improve the efficiency of our nation’s homes, offices, schools, hospitals, restaurants and stores. As part of the overall project, PARC will develop a wireless system of peel-and-stick sensor nodes that are powered by radio frequency hubs, relaying data to building management systems that can significantly reduce energy use.
